Surprise!
This year, America’s Got Talent is back and it’s better than ever. All of the champions of the past season will be competing on a new version of the show: America’s Got Talent: The Champions. Fans of America’s Got Talent were surprised when Susan Boyle took the stage in the first episode of this season. A decade ago, Susan appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, singing “I dreamed a dream” from Les Misérables on her initial audition.
It was actually humorous when she told the judges she was a singer when she auditioned for AGT, and show creator and judge Simon Cowell looked pretty skeptical as well. However, Susan won the competition that season with her voice and demonstrated how talented she really was. Unfortunately, she didn’t win, but she came in second! As a result of her time on Britan’s Got Talent, Susan released her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, in November 2009.
The album became one of the best selling albums in the UK, setting a record for the largest first week sales for a debut album. In 2012, she returned to Britan’s Got Talent as a guest, performing “You’ll See” as well as singing “Mull of Kintyre ” at Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant. During her pre-taped interview for America’s Got Talent: The Champions, Susan discussed how huge a role Britain’s Got Talent played in changing her life. She said before the show, she felt ordinary and nothing special, but now she feels like she has something to prove on this season.
“I’m excited to show Simon how much I’ve grown since the last time. I’m really looking forward to seeing him. This time, I have something to prove. I’d love to win.”
For her first performance of this season, Susan chose to sing a song that has become popular during her career, “Wild Horses”, which immediately lit up Simon’s face. He joked with her, asking what her name was before telling her how happy he was to see her. During her performance, the audience and all four judges clapped and cheered for her after she finished singing. After everyone settled down, the judges told Susan what they thought of her performance.
Simon started off by saying: “You know what Susan? I can’t think of any other contestant who has defined this show better than you. I’m being honest with you, you’re the one. You’ve made a huge difference in a lot of people’s lives and I’m absolutely thrilled that you’re here.”
